A prop firm activation fee is a one-time charge that falls between passing your evaluation and trading your funded account. It is not part of your monthly subscription, and it is not a reset fee. It is the switch that turns on the account you already earned. Miss it, forget it, or misunderstand it, and you may wait days or spend more than necessary.

This article covers what every TradersPost-supported futures prop firm currently publishes about activation fees, how Topstep's two-path structure works, why a zero activation fee is a pricing decision rather than a discount, and what deadline you cannot afford to miss at Apex Trader Funding.

All figures below come directly from each firm's published pricing pages. Prices change frequently in this industry, so verify the current rate on each firm's site before you pay anything.

Activation Fees at a Glance

What the fee is, in plain terms

An activation fee is a separate one-time charge due after you pass an evaluation, before your funded account is switched on. It is distinct from the monthly evaluation subscription and from any reset fee you may pay if you breach a rule. Paying it unlocks the funded account you already earned by passing. Not paying it means the funded account never opens.

Quick-reference table by firm

  • TradeDay lists "No activation fee" on every plan across Intraday and End of Day account types.1
  • MyFundedFutures advertises "$0 Activation fee on any MFFU plan" with a one-time payment model and no renewals.2
  • Funded Futures Family states "No activation fee on any plan" and that traders can activate instantly after passing with no extra cost.3
  • Alpha Futures explicitly lists no activation fee on Zero, Standard, and Advanced account types.4
  • Topstep charges $149 once per Express Funded Account on its Standard Path, or $0 on its higher-priced No Activation Fee Trading Combine.5
  • Take Profit Trader charges a one-time $130 PRO account fee after passing.6

What the Fee Actually Pays For

Account provisioning, not a penalty

The activation fee covers the administrative and technical cost of provisioning a live funded-level account for a trader who has demonstrated they can pass. It is charged once per funded account earned, not on a recurring basis. At Topstep, after paying the activation fee on the Standard Path, the Express Funded Account is available within minutes, or after markets reopen at 5 PM CT Sunday if you pass on a Friday.5

Reactivation is a separate, higher charge

Confusing activation with reactivation is a common and expensive mistake. At Topstep, if you lose a funded account before your first payout, the Back2Funded reactivation fee is $599 for a 50K account, $699 for a 100K account, and $829 for a 150K account.5 Reactivation is available up to two times at the same size and must be requested within 30 calendar days of account closure. That is four to five times the initial activation fee. Conflating the two numbers can make a firm look much cheaper or more expensive than it actually is when you are comparing options.

Firms That Charge No Activation Fee

TradeDay and MyFundedFutures

TradeDay publishes "No activation fee" on every plan listed on its pricing page, across both Intraday and End of Day account types.1 The model is a recurring monthly subscription for the evaluation, with no separate charge when you pass. MyFundedFutures takes a different structural approach: accounts are one-time payment with no renewals, and the firm prominently advertises "$0 Activation fee on any MFFU plan."2 In both cases, the cost you paid to attempt the evaluation is the total cost to reach your funded account.

Funded Futures Family and Alpha Futures

Funded Futures Family states "No activation fee on any plan" and that traders can activate their funded account instantly after passing with no extra cost.3 Alpha Futures is explicit about it at the plan level, listing "No activation fee on Zero Accounts," "No activation fee on Standard Accounts," and "No activation fee on Advanced Accounts" across its pricing tiers.4 Take Profit Trader sits in a slightly different category: its comparison table labels the post-pass charge as a "One Time $130 Fee" for the PRO account, distinct from the recurring monthly fees it attributes to competitors.6

Topstep: Two Paths, Two Structures

Standard Path activation fee

On the Standard Path, Topstep charges $149 once per Express Funded Account earned, regardless of account size (50K, 100K, or 150K). The monthly evaluation cost on this path is lower: $49/month for a 50K, $99/month for a 100K, and $199/month for a 150K. Topstep describes the Standard Path as best for traders still building consistency.5 The tradeoff is straightforward: you pay less each month during the evaluation but write a check when you pass.

No Activation Fee Path tradeoff

On the No Activation Fee Path, the monthly evaluation cost is higher: $95/month for a 50K, $149/month for a 100K, and $229/month for a 150K. The activation charge when you pass is $0. Topstep describes this path as best for traders confident they will pass in one or two attempts.5 One critical detail: paths cannot be changed after purchase, so the choice locks in your cost structure permanently before you begin trading. If you take three months to pass on the No Activation Fee Path, you will have paid more in subscription fees than the $149 activation fee you avoided.

Zero Activation Fee Is a Pricing Choice

How firms recover the cost elsewhere

Firms that drop the activation fee typically price their evaluations higher, use one-time payment structures, or generate revenue from the volume of evaluation purchases. Comparing a single line item in isolation can make one firm appear cheaper when the total cost to funded is actually higher. The correct comparison adds up every dollar paid from the moment you purchase your first evaluation through the moment your funded account is live and tradeable.

What to add up before deciding

For monthly-subscription firms, multiply the number of months you expect to take by the monthly fee, then add any activation fee. For one-time-payment firms, add the evaluation purchase price to any funded-account fee charged at activation. Reset fees factor in too: if your strategy has a meaningful failure rate, a lower activation fee paired with expensive resets may cost more overall. Topstep's reset pricing matches its monthly evaluation cost per path ($49 or $95 for a 50K, depending on path), which is worth including in any honest total-cost calculation.5

The Deadline Most People Miss

Apex Trader Funding's seven-day window

Apex Trader Funding charges a one-time PA activation fee per account after passing. Traders have seven calendar days to pay the activation fee. If it is not paid within that window, the passed evaluation expires permanently. This deadline is documented in Apex's help center and is not extended or recoverable once it lapses.

Note: The Apex Trader Funding help center pages listed in the source list for this article were not accessible for direct verification at time of writing. Confirm the current deadline and any fee amount directly on Apex's site before purchasing an evaluation.

Why deadlines matter for automated traders

Traders running automated strategies may not check their dashboards daily, which makes it easy to miss a time-limited activation window. Setting a calendar reminder or email alert immediately after a passed evaluation is the simplest way to avoid forfeiting the account. Check each firm's specific deadline policy before purchase. It varies by firm and is not always prominently displayed on the pricing page.

How to Compare Firms Without Getting Misled

Use total cost to funded as your metric

Total cost to funded equals all fees paid from signup through the moment the funded account is live and tradeable. For a monthly-subscription firm with an activation fee, this includes every month's subscription paid during the evaluation plus the activation fee. For a one-time-payment firm with no activation fee, this is simply the evaluation purchase price. Use this number, not the activation fee alone, as your comparison metric.

Check the funded account rules too

Activation cost is only one dimension of value. Profit split, payout eligibility, consistency requirements, and maximum payout caps all affect how much you will actually earn once the account is live. Topstep's XFA Standard requires 5 winning days of $150 or more profit each, while XFA Consistency requires 3 trading days with a 40% consistency target.7 A lower activation fee on a plan with restrictive payout rules may yield less total income than a higher activation fee on a plan with faster payout access. Read the funded account parameters, not just the pricing table.

Where Automation Fits

Routing signals to funded accounts

TradersPost connects TradingView or TrendSpider alerts to Tradovate or ProjectX prop firm accounts, letting traders execute manual or automated futures trades across evaluation and funded accounts simultaneously.8 Before linking any automation to a prop firm account, verify that the firm's rules permit automated trading strategies. Policies differ meaningfully by firm.

Confirm automation rules before you activate

Prop firms differ in what they allow for automation, scaling, and risk. At Topstep, automated strategies are permitted on Express Funded Accounts with conditions, and traders must review Prohibited Conduct and Prohibited Trading Strategies before using them.7 Activation fees are non-refundable at Topstep and across the industry generally.5 Confirming rule compliance before paying the activation fee avoids a costly mistake. If you are unsure whether your strategy qualifies, contact the firm's support team before you activate.

Bottom Line

  • TradeDay, MyFundedFutures, Funded Futures Family, and Alpha Futures all advertise $0 activation fees on their standard plans.
  • Topstep charges $149 on its Standard Path or $0 on its higher-priced No Activation Fee Path. The path is locked at purchase and cannot be changed.
  • Take Profit Trader charges a one-time $130 PRO account fee after passing, distinct from recurring monthly fees.
  • Apex Trader Funding gives traders seven calendar days to pay the activation fee after passing. Miss the window and the passed evaluation expires permanently.
  • Always compare total cost to funded across all fees from first purchase through activation, not the activation fee in isolation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a prop firm activation fee?

It is a one-time charge due after you pass a funded evaluation, required before your funded account is switched on and tradeable. It is separate from your monthly evaluation subscription and from any reset fee charged if you breach the funded account rules. Not all firms charge one: TradeDay, MyFundedFutures, Funded Futures Family, and Alpha Futures all advertise $0 activation fees on their standard plans.1234

Which prop firms have no activation fee?

TradeDay, MyFundedFutures, Funded Futures Family, and Alpha Futures (on Zero, Standard, and Advanced plans) all advertise no activation fee.1234 Topstep charges $0 on its No Activation Fee Trading Combine path, though that path carries a higher monthly evaluation cost.5 A zero activation fee does not mean the total cost to funded is lowest. Compare full pricing including evaluation fees before deciding.

How much does Topstep charge to activate a funded account?

On the Standard Path, Topstep charges $149 once per Express Funded Account earned, regardless of account size.5 On the No Activation Fee Path, the charge is $0, but monthly evaluation costs are higher across all account sizes. The path is locked at purchase and cannot be changed, so the choice affects your total cost to funded permanently.

What happens if I do not pay the activation fee in time?

At Apex Trader Funding, you have seven calendar days to pay the PA activation fee after passing. If unpaid, the passed evaluation expires permanently. There is no documented grace period or appeal process for a lapsed Apex activation window. Setting a reminder immediately after receiving a pass notification is the simplest way to avoid losing the account.

Is the activation fee refundable if I change my mind?

At Topstep, the activation fee is listed among non-refundable fees, and the firm recommends contacting Trader Support before filing any dispute.5 Prop firm fees are generally non-refundable across the industry. Filing a chargeback without first contacting a firm risks account suspension, as documented in Topstep's pricing and payment FAQ.5 Check each firm's refund policy before paying.
