Grok for Pine Script: Features and Reports
Where Grok 4.7 runs for Pine Script coding, what xAI and Cursor document about it, and what traders say after using it on TradingView.
Marketing
You can use Grok for Pine Script through Grok Build, Cursor, and the xAI API, but public evidence that the current Grok 4.5 to 4.7 models write reliable Pine Script v6 remains thin. This report covers documented features, pricing, and attributed trader experiences rather than assigning Grok a score. For broader comparisons, see our best AI for Pine Script guide.
Grok can produce usable indicators, but reported results include line-wrap syntax errors, odd table behavior, and code its own authors call imperfect. Treat generated code as a draft: provide current Pine documentation, compile it in TradingView, inspect its logic, and paper trade every alert before automation.
Where Grok Runs For Pine Script
Grok Build
Grok Build is SpaceXAI's coding agent. It runs through an interactive terminal interface, headless scripts, or the Agent Client Protocol. Installation uses one curl command, while authentication opens a browser or reads an XAI_API_KEY environment variable.1 The Grok 4.7 launch post also invites readers to try Grok Build for free.2
That makes it a fit for traders who keep several Pine files, such as indicators, libraries, and alert templates, in one project folder.
Grok Inside Cursor
Cursor includes Grok 4.7, 4.6, and 4.5 in its first-party Cursor Models pool. Its published per-million-token rates list Grok 4.7 at $2 input, $0.50 cached input, and $6 output. Grok 4.7 Fast doubles standard input and output prices.3
SpaceXAI's release notes describe Grok 4.7 Fast as the same model billed at twice the standard token rates, available only through Cursor and Grok Build, not the public xAI API.4 Grok 4.5 was previously announced as available in Cursor on all plans.5
Grok Through The API
Developers can call grok-4.7 through the xAI API using the AI SDK, an OpenAI-compatible Python client, the xAI SDK, or curl. Requests shown in the official examples carry an API key in an Authorization: Bearer header.1 SpaceXAI also lists third-party coding harnesses, model routers, and cloud platforms as availability routes.2
Grok 4.7 Specs And Pricing
Context And Knowledge Cutoff
Grok 4.7 has a 500,000-token context window, accepts text and images, and produces text output. Reasoning effort supports low, medium, high, and xhigh, with high as the default.4 Its documented knowledge cutoff is May 2026.6
Token Pricing Tiers
Below 200,000 prompt tokens, pricing is $2 input, $0.50 cached input, and $6 output per million tokens. Above that threshold, the respective rates become $4, $1, and $12 for the request.4 SpaceXAI says Grok 4.7 is served at the same price and speed as Grok 4.6.2
Dated Vendor Benchmarks
SpaceXAI's September 21, 2026 launch post reports 46.3% for Grok 4.7 on CursorBench 4.0 versus 40.4% for Grok 4.6. Terminal-Bench 4.0 results were 37.6% and 20.3%, respectively. Grok 4.7 used xHigh effort while Grok 4.6 used High. The same chart places Fable 5.1 Max ahead at 51.8% and 57.9%.2
These are vendor-published, dated benchmarks, not independent Pine Script tests. They do not establish how often Grok generates correct Pine v6 syntax or trading logic.
Cursor's Grok Models Explained
What Jointly Trained Means
Cursor describes Grok 4.5 as a mixture-of-experts model trained jointly with SpaceXAI using trillions of tokens of Cursor data, including developer interactions with codebases and software tools. SpaceXAI separately says Grok 4.5 was trained alongside Cursor.7
That language is documented clearly for Grok 4.5. The Grok 4.7 launch post does not repeat it. Cursor also disclosed that an earlier Cursor codebase snapshot was accidentally included in Grok 4.5 training, giving the model an advantage on CursorBench by an unclear amount.7
SpaceX Acquired Cursor
SpaceX completed its acquisition of Cursor on August 14, 2026, following an April partnership with SpaceXAI focused on model training.8 Current xAI documentation and releases use the SpaceXAI name. Grok 4.5's launch dates also differ by publisher: Cursor's post is dated July 8, while SpaceXAI's is dated July 16.
What Traders Report About Grok
Indicators Worked With Caveats
Public reports are anecdotal. One TradingView author used Grok for an NQ session statistics table and said the code “got funky.” The table disappears at 6 PM, but the author left that behavior because the script otherwise worked.9
Another author credited Grok for a 200-day SMA distance oscillator. They said the code was “not 100% perfect,” although percentage deviation and background-color outputs appeared correct in their initial analysis.10 A self-described non-programmer likewise reported that a Grok-created ADR% extension indicator worked for their use, without documenting independent verification.11
Reported Pine Syntax Friction
A Cursor forum user testing Grok 3 said it was reluctant to output code without an explicit request, produced poor one-shot Pine results without a sample, and made a line-wrap indentation mistake that causes Pine syntax problems. The same user still reported that it helped solve one difficult problem.12
Weak Or Unverifiable Claims
Claims that Grok categorically beats ChatGPT or other models are not supported by the sources reviewed here. Most Pine reports concern the Grok 3 period or omit the version. None of the reviewed trader reports names Grok 4.5, 4.6, 4.7, Grok Build, or Grok inside Cursor.
One Pine library does identify Grok 4.1, but its author explicitly says development remained under human supervision and that a person made the decisions.13 Another Grok-assisted Pine v6 author openly requested feedback and said they did not know what they were doing, making the script an example of unreviewed AI code rather than validation.14
Grok's Knowledge Cutoff For Pine
May 2026 Versus Pine Updates
Grok 4.7's May 2026 cutoff means it cannot natively know Pine Script changes introduced after that date. This limitation applies to every model with a fixed training cutoff, not only Grok. A large context window helps only when current material is supplied in the conversation.
Working Around The Gap
- Paste relevant Pine Script v6 reference material into the prompt.
- Provide a short, compiling v6 script that demonstrates the required pattern.
- Ask Grok to identify functions or syntax it is uncertain about.
- Compile every revision in Pine Editor and inspect warnings.
- Verify calculations and alert timing separately from syntax.
A script that compiles has passed a syntax check, not a logic review. Confirm bar-state behavior, repainting risk, session boundaries, order conditions, and alert frequency before using its output.
TradingView Webhooks And Grok API
Why Alerts Need Middleware
The xAI API examples send the API key in an Authorization: Bearer header. Rather than trying to make a TradingView alert act as the API client, plan on a small receiving service in between: it accepts the alert, holds the key, and makes the Grok request itself. That also keeps the key out of alert messages.
What The Receiver Does
Custom middleware can validate the TradingView message, store the xAI key, build a Grok request, and process the response. That is different from broker order routing.
TradersPost receives structured trade signals containing fields such as ticker, action, quantity, orderType, takeProfit, and stopLoss, then processes them for a connected broker or exchange. It is not a general-purpose proxy for calling an external AI API. A “TradingView alert triggers Grok analysis” workflow therefore needs separate custom middleware.
Deciding Whether To Use Grok
Choosing Build, Cursor, Or API
- Grok Build: best suited to terminal users who want an agent to inspect files and iterate across a repository.
- Cursor: practical when Pine code lives beside other projects and you want Grok available with Claude, GPT, and Gemini models.
- xAI API: appropriate for a custom Pine assistant, validation pipeline, or internal coding tool.
For alternative workflows, compare ChatGPT for Pine Script, Claude for Pine Script, Claude Code for Pine Script, and OpenAI Codex for Pine Script.
From Draft To Live Automation
Treat Grok's output as a code review starting point. Compile it, compare every condition with the written specification, inspect historical signals, and test real-time alerts. Paper trade before committing capital because the public anecdotes reviewed here do not provide rigorous testing of current Grok models.
After the script compiles, backtests as expected, and fires reliable alerts, connect its TradingView alert to a TradersPost webhook. Keep the strategy on a paper connection while you compare TradingView's Alert Log with received signals, then consider live automation only after the complete path behaves as intended.
Bottom Line
- Grok 4.7 runs in Grok Build, Cursor, and through the xAI API.
- Its 500,000-token context helps with large projects, but its May 2026 cutoff requires current Pine v6 references.
- Trader reports show usable but imperfect scripts, mostly from older Grok versions.
- Vendor coding benchmarks are not Pine-specific reliability tests.
- Compile, review, backtest, and paper trade every AI-generated script.
Grok is a credible coding option, but there is not enough current Pine-specific evidence to call it the best choice. Use the documented workflow and your own controlled tests, then compare the result with the models covered in our Best AI for Pine Script comparison.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Grok Write Working Pine Code?
Sometimes, according to individual traders. Reported scripts produced useful output, but examples also include disappearing tables, imperfect code, and indentation errors. Most reports predate Grok 4.5 to 4.7, so evidence for current models is limited.
How Do Build And Cursor Differ?
Grok Build is SpaceXAI's terminal coding agent. Cursor is a separate code editor with Grok 4.7, 4.6, and 4.5 in its model pool. Grok 4.7 Fast is offered through both interfaces but not through the public xAI API.
Is Cursor's Grok The Same Model?
Cursor and SpaceXAI explicitly describe Grok 4.5 as jointly trained or trained alongside Cursor. The Grok 4.7 announcement does not repeat that description. SpaceX has owned Cursor since August 2026.
Can TradingView Call Grok Directly?
Plan on a receiving service in between. xAI's API examples authenticate with a bearer key in an authorization header, and a small service that receives the alert can hold that key and make the Grok request without exposing it in alert messages.
Does Grok Know Current Pine v6?
Not beyond its May 2026 knowledge cutoff unless you provide newer material. Include current reference excerpts and compiling examples, then test all generated code in Pine Editor.
